De Soto County is east of the Sarasota-Bradenton area and is bordered by Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee, Hardee, and Highlands counties. The county has 3 square miles of water. The average January temperature is 63.0 degrees F, and the average August temperature is 81.9 degrees F. The average annual rainfall is 50.66 inches.
De Soto County was established from a portion of Manatee County in 1887 and named for Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto.
In 1993 over 70% of De Soto County's population was in unincorporated areas. The only incorporated area is Arcadia, which in 1993 had a population of 6,543. The unincorporated area of Southeast Arcadia had a population of 4,145 in 1990. In 1993, 83% of De Soto County's population was white and 17% was nonwhite. In 1990, 9.6% of the population was Hispanic. Of the population increase between 1980 and 1990, 89.3% was due to net migration. The 1992 birth rate for the county was 15.6 live births per 1,000 persons, and the 1992 death rate was 10.4 deaths per 1,000 persons. In 1992 the infant mortality rate was 10.3 per 1,000.
